What are the best features of iOS 14? | The best features of iOS 14.4 are: Right now, there are 17 apps you should be using on your iPhone

Apple’s latest iOS and iPadOS updates have a lot to teach us. But don’t worry; we’ve got you covered.

Apple keeps improving iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 by introducing useful new capabilities and features. Apple recently launched iOS 14.4, which added a new workout to Apple Watch Fitness Plus. In February, it added a new Unity watch face to commemorate Black History Month. A series of security fixes were also included in the update for vulnerabilities that were being actively exploited. Oh, no.

Following the addition of Apple ProRaw images to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, iOS 14.4 was released. With the release of iOS 14 in September, Apple added a slew of new features to its mobile devices, adding to an already impressive list of capabilities. iOS 14.5 is currently in beta and is expected to be a major update for iPhone users. Apple is everything.

The Apple Report newsletter from CNET brings you the latest news, reviews, and tips on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and software.

You can customize your iPhone’s home screen, for example, by creating custom app icons and adding new widgets wherever you want. In addition, a new Scribble feature in the iPad update lets you write in any text field with the Apple Pencil ($125 at Amazon), and the tablet will convert it to text instead of bringing up the keyboard. And that’s just the start.

Here are the best iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 tips and tricks we’ve found. This post will be updated on a regular basis, so come back often for new and exciting ideas.

1. Take a look at the new features on the home screen.

App Library, an app drawer-like feature on the iPhone, serves as a warehouse for all of the apps you don’t use on a regular basis. Swiping from right to left on your screen past all of your current home screens will take you to the App Library. The ability to put widgets on the home screen is another first for the iPhone. Apple gave developers the tools they needed to create a new widget style that will make your Android friends envious. We go over the changes to the home screen in greater depth here.

2. Create a Smart Stack widget that is unique to you.

When it comes to widgets, you’re not obligated to use Apple’s Smart Stack widget. You can make your own widget stack using the same method you used to make an app folder. Seriously, deciding which widgets to include takes longer than creating it.

3. Create your own application icons

Apple also updated its Shortcuts app with new features, the most popular of which is the ability to create your own app icons and completely customize the appearance of your phone. You can replace the Apple Mail app icon with a picture of a cute cat or the Gmail icon and use it to launch the app. app instead of the Apple Mail app icon. Although the procedure is time-consuming, it is necessary if you want a home screen.

4. Using App Clips, you can use apps without having to instal them.

Consider App Clips to be miniature apps that only show you a part of the full app’s functionality. A Yelp App Clip, for example, could only show you the business hours and menu for a particular restaurant. Do you want to give one a shot? Search for Panera Bread in the Apple Maps app on your iPhone, tap on a location, and then pick Order Food. Isn’t it amazing? After you’ve used an App Clip, you can find it in the recently added folder of the App Library.

5. The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max have the ability to take raw images.

With iOS 14.3, Apple introduced the ProRaw photo format, which allows you to take photos in the “raw” photographic format and edit them without the image degradation that happens when the photo is converted to a JPG (Apple’s camera app’s standard). This is undoubtedly a photographic feature, but it should pique the interest of iPhone users who want to get more out of their cameras. Check out our full ProRaw guide for more information and directions on where to find the new setting.

6. Use Fitness Plus to work out at home.

With gyms closed or at capacity, now is the perfect time to work out at home. Apple’s Fitness Plus service, which uses your Apple Watch to track your workout, is built right into your iPhone, iPad ($305 at Amazon), and Apple TV ($180 at Best Buy). Weekly releases of guided video workouts are available, with options for all fitness levels. After reading our hands-on with the new service, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to get it set up.

7. It’s time to go for a walk

With iOS 14.4 and WatchOS 7.3, a new workout called Time to Walk was added to Fitness Plus. Apple has hired celebrities to accompany you on a virtual walk, telling inspiring stories that are intertwined with personal music choices. Before you can use it, you’ll need to upgrade your watch and phone. Here’s how to get started with the new workout and get the most out of it.

8. Picture-in-Picture is now available on the iPhone.

You don’t have to choose between watching a Twitch stream and browsing Reddit on your iPhone any longer. Now that Apple has added picture-in-picture mode to the iPhone, you can do both at the same time with iOS 14. This feature has been available on the iPad for a few years, so it’s good to see it come to the iPhone as well. To activate PiP, simply exit the app and return to the home screen once you’ve finished watching a video. Some apps, such as YouTube, aren’t compatible with the feature. By going to Settings > General > Picture in Picture, you can see a list of all the apps on your phone that support it. To get a better idea of when and where picture-in-picture works, learn more about it.

9. It’s now more difficult to delete apps.

With the addition of the App Library, removing an app from your phone now requires an extra step, which is not at all intuitive for long-time iPhone users. But it doesn’t have to be difficult; we’ll walk you through the new app deletion steps.

10. Forget about Apple Mail and Safari.

A few years ago, Apple added the ability to delete its own apps from your iPhone, but you couldn’t set Gmail or Outlook as your default email app. You can now, but Apple has limited this new feature to email and web browsers only. It just takes a few taps to make the switch, and you’ll never have to use Apple’s apps again.

11. There’s a new audio feature on the AirPods Pro.

The iPhone and iPad were not the only devices to get a major update. A small firmware update for Apple’s AirPods Pro was also released, which added a new feature called Spatial Audio. To use the feature, you’ll need an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14. When both devices are upgraded, when you’re watching a video, the sound will adapt to your movements, following each twist and turn. It was a “out-of-bud experience,” according to CNET’s David Carnoy. And he is correct.

12. The iPad resembles a Mac more than ever before.

iPadOS 14 introduces a number of new features and enhancements that make the interface closer to that of a Mac. Is it the Mac that, with MacOS Big Sur, is starting to resemble an iPad? In any case, you’ll want to learn everything you can about iPadOS 14’s new features.

13. The best features are the ones that are hidden.

Not to be left out, iOS 14 has a number of hidden features that do some genuinely incredible things. A new back-tap feature, for example, allows you to tap on the back of your phone two or three times to perform a task such as taking a screenshot or launching an app. So far, we’ve discovered nine hidden features worth sharing with you, and we’re planning to keep adding to the list.

14. Enhancements to privacy

One of Apple’s major selling points is keeping your information private, and iOS 14 goes even further to help you keep your information private. There are new location-sharing settings that allow you to choose whether an app sees your exact location or a broader region. There’s also a new notification dot that lets you know when an app is using your phone’s camera or microphone, as well as more precise controls over which images an app can access. Take a look at all of the new privacy features and how to make use of them.

15. Innovative camera techniques

The Camera app has a few new features that are subtle but significant. There’s a new guide to remind you to stay still when taking a picture at night, for example. You’ll notice crosshairs indicating where you should keep the camera. There’s also a new exposure adjustment dial, and you’ll be able to take more pictures in less time. Learn how to use the new features and where to find them with the help of animated images.

16. Improve your selfie skills

Another new feature in the Camera app is a new front-facing camera setting that will make your selfies stand out. The new mirror mode makes the camera behave more like a mirror, making it easier to ensure that your shot is framed and lined up correctly. We’ll show you where to go for the new option.

17. Are you still hungry for more? We figured it out.

As a bonus round, we’ve gathered a few more pointers on how to do even more, such as tag someone in a group Messages conversation and use Apple’s new Translate app to carry a conversation in two languages. We go over those two points, as well as a few more of our favorite features. We’re just getting started with iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. There’s always a lot to discover and learn. Are you just getting your hands on a new iPhone 12? Here’s how you do it. After that, make sure to double-check these settings. Finally, make sure your Google Authenticator accounts are transferred to your new phone.
